We Love You Oprah!!!

Oprah Winfrey said “good-bye” to millions of viewers this week after 25 years on the air.

Oprah, started her meteoric rise to the top of Daytime TV in September 1985, when in less that a year she turned AM Chicago, a “faltering half-hour morning program on WLS-TV into the hottest show in town”.  The result, The Oprah Winfrey Show was born.  The rest is as they say “history”.

Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in Steven Spielberg’s film The Color Purple, creator of “Oprah’s Book Club” known for propelling authors to the top of the bestseller’s lists, co-founder of Oxygen Media, a company dedicated to producing programming for women, publisher of O: The Oprah Magazine, inventor of Oprah’s Angel Network, responsible for raising more than $51,000,000 for charitable programs including founder of The Leadership Academy for Girls and owner of Harpo Productions and The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), Ms. Winfrey according to Forbes Magazine is “the richest African American of the 20th Century and the world’s only Black billionaire for three years running.”  Additionally in 2005, Business Week named her “the greatest Black philanthropist in American history.”  (See Oprah’s Biography)

It is a fact that Oprah has touched us all with her warm encouragement to “Live Your Best LIfe,” and on May 17, 2011, approximately 13,000 people packed Chicago’s United Center to say “Thank you.”  “Surprise Oprah! A Farewell Spectacular”, a star-studded farewell party for the Queen of Daytime TV featured guests and performances by many of today’s biggest names.  Tom Hanks and Tom Cruise started off the festivities, followed by The Black Eyed Peas, The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Halle Berry, Madonna, Beyonce, Queen Latifah, Usher, Michael Jordan, Diane Sawyer, Maria Shriver, Josh Grobin, Stevie Wonder, Jaime Foxx, Racal Flatts, Simon Cowell, Rosie O’Donald and of course, BFF Gail King (just to name a few).

Since her humble beginnings, Oprah’s accomplishments have enabled her to join an elite group of Americans inducted into the Academy of Achievement.  She has also been the recipient of numerous other awards, including the NAACP Image Award, The Bob Hope Humanitarian Award and was a 2010 Kennedy Center Honors Recipient.

Tom Hanks welcomed Oprah to her surprise party by telling her “Today you are surrounded by nothing but love.”  Oprah responded “I feel the love.”  Once again, I think she spoke for us all.

Accessory of the Week

One of the hot trends you will see on both the Couture and the Ready-to-Wear runway this fall is the gloved hand.  Long, short or in between, gloves are once again a major fashion statement.  Gloves in high fashion were extremely popularity during the 1940’s and 1950’s during which time the long glove was often seen being worn with strapless gowns by Hollywood starlets.  During the 1960’s gloves decreased in popularity and remained an overlooked accessory for years.  The population for the most part, returned to thinking of gloves in a purely utilitarian manner.  Gloves, however, can add a new dimension to almost any outfit and are the perfect “touch” to complete your look.  Today’s designers are making gloves available in many different styles, fabrics, textures, colors and lengths.  Even men’s fashion has embraced this trend both as a sporty accessory and as a compliment to evening wear.

Black Swan – The Movie

Black Swan, a psycho drama about a ballerina is receiving rave reviews and there is buzz in Hollywood that its star, Natalie Portman will be nominated for an Oscar.  Mila Kunis, Barbara Hersey and Wynona Ryder co-star in this cinematically beautiful, yet disturbing film.  The life of a prima ballerina can be a harsh one, but there are few things more beautiful to watch.  The costumes and make-up are outstanding, the story edgy and the acting superb.  A must see!

Black Swan -- While vying for the coveted lead roles in a production of Swan Lake, a veteran ballerina (Portman) enters into a twisted friendship with a promising new dancer (Kunis) that threatens to consume her.

Editor’s Reverie

Andrea Stuart

There’s nothing like leaving behind the routine of your shoulder-hunching, time-crunching daily activities and relaxing into vacation, even if it is January. In 2009, my husband and I visited Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania—more specifically, Spring Church—to watch Super Bowl XLIII with family. I’m not much of a sports fan, but I am a fan of community. And Pittsburgh—as well as surrounding townships and villages—emanates a strong sense of pride. Black and gold draped the vendors’ tables that lined The Strip District as the Steelers’ Fight Song intrusively echoed in the near-glacial air. Walking the streets of Pittsburgh, I couldn’t help but feel at home among the ripened brick buildings, each with a story to tell.

The most fascinating aspect of visiting the City of Bridges—Allegheny County has more than 1,700 bridges, 720 of which are reportedly within Pittsburgh city limits—is the camaraderie. Never have I seen city folk come together so fluidly for no other reason than for good cheer.

Super Bowl XLIII held a special meaning for Pittsburghers this year as the Steelers earned their sixth Super Bowl championship. Headlines were painted in wit reading, “The Joy of Six,” and “Lords of the Rings.”

We spent the final hours of Super Bowl Sunday cozied-up in the Apollo Elks Lodge where I ran into old-timers like Regis, who had become increasingly aware of his mortality and now that he’d seen this “miracle” was making plans to finish his bucket list before time took the reins.

Slurs swirled the room in harmony as local lodge members celebrated the Steelers’ victory. “I’ll buy breakfast for anyone who shows up tomorrow morning,” yelled one member. Then, when the body-writhing tune of Dancing Queen came over the Elks’ speakers, I realized that I was in a rural town of Pittsburgh, where time has stopped and its residents simply don’t mind. My husband and I flew nearly 3,000 miles for this experience and we surely would not have encountered such esprit de corps at a Raiders riot…er…celebration.

Truthfully, Pittsburghers are not unlike residents here at home; maintaining hope through political and economic uncertainty, clinging to whatever elements each person has in common with another, holding onto the knowledge that humanity will persevere. I believe much of our nation is aware of this verity and should aspire to promote a sense of community, and in the end, we will emerge strong and proud. In the words of M. Scott Peck, author of The Road Less Traveled, “There can be no peace, and ultimately no life, without community.”
